SEWING
Take a square of 2½" (6 cm) of polka dot fabric and fold it in half along the diagonal. Now bend
an angle of 45 ° of the triangle obtained, to the corner of 90 °, as shown in the photo. Secure it in
place with a pin. Do the same with the other three squares.
DOWNLOAD PATTERN for sides BAG
Place the four squares of polka dot fabric on four squares of linen 4½" (11 cm) in correspondence
of the bottom-right. Fix work with a pin and sew the fold triangles to secure it in place on the square background. Beware: this seam will be distant from the edge of the fabric of 3.2 mm at most.
Position the four squares so they form a windmill in the center.
Maintaining a seam allowance of 0.6 cm, sewn squares together according to below photos.
At each step iron the reverse seam allowances open and reduce the seam allowance cutting the polka dot fabric with scissors.
By following the instructions above make two more windmills: When these three squares are finished
and sewn together they are the first row for the bag. To make the second row of windmills, we bend other 4 square polka dot fabric as described above. As shown in below photos, place 2 of the squares already bent at some corners of the squares from first row and secure them in place with a pin. Secure the folded squares in dot fabric to the linen squares with a seam (as you did previously; this seam must max. be 3.2 mm). Now sew the three squares together while maintaining a seam allowance of ¼" (0.6 cm).
First row is now complete. Always remember to iron the reverse seam allowances open and reduce their thickness by cutting a part of the polka dot fabric.
To speed up your work and avoid assembly errors, I suggest you to prepare all square polka
dot fabric folded and secure them with a seam in the right position to the respective square of linen
background. As you can see in the photo at the right, the outer part of the bag is made up of 8 strips, formed respectively by 6 squares each. Layer the outer bag with the floral fabric, the adhesive stabilizer and the 2 pieces of thin padding, having the stabilizer between the padding.
Baste the pieces.
Quilt the bag following the contour of the square and line of the windmill.
Trim the work by cutting any excess padding and floral fabric.
Run along the four sides of the rectangle a zig zag seam.
On the two short sides of the rectangle we have to apply a binding, proceed as follows.
Take a strip of fabric with polka dots of 2½ x 23½" (6 x 60 cm) and fold it in half wrong sides together
and iron.
Place the binding on the short side of the rectangle, on the outside of the bag: the binding must have an open end toward the edge of the fabric. Sew the binding in position and keep a seam allowance of ¼" (0.6 cm). Then fold the binding around the seam allowance and sew it into place by hand.
Do the same on the other short side of the rectangle.
Along the two long sides of the floral side of the quilt top draw a line with a pen ink evanescent in a
distance of 4" (10 cm) from the edge. Now bend the two long sides ¾" + 1¾" (1 + 4,5 cm) so the fabric edge reaches the pen line. Secure the work in place with safety pins. Sew along the fold by hand so a tunnel for below tapes is made.
To form the tape take a strip of fabric with polka dots 4 x 59" (10 x 150 cm). Iron it half. Now bend
the two ends of the strip of about ¼" (0.5 cm) towards the back of the fabric and iron. Open the
strip and rest the edge of the fabric along the fold/centerline and iron. Again fold the strip in half. At
last iron and sew on all four sides. Do the same with the other strip. Place the two tapes inside the tunnels at each side of the bag.
POCKETS
Take two rectangles in dot fabric being 6 x 9¾" (15 x 25 cm) and thin padding in same size.
With right sides together join the pocket, leaving an open to turn the pocket.
Turn the pocket and iron. Close opening by hand. Topstitch the pocket on four sides.
If desired, decorate the pocket with an embroidered heart.
Do the same for forming the second pocket. Place the pockets on the lining centering them, at a
distance from the top edges of the bag approximately 5,5" (14 cm). Sew pockets by hand to the lining.
PARTS SIDE
The sides of the bag has a pocket, we begin to prepare it.
Take a rectangle 9 x 10½" (23 x 17 cm) of polka dot fabric and a rectangle of floral fabric. With
right sides together sew one of the long sides, turn the work and topstitch. The pocket is ready.
Now take two rectangles of thin padding 9 x 10½" (23 x 27 cm), the adhesive stabilizer and floral
fabric in same size. Place stabilizer between the padding. Position the pocket at bottom, having
floral fabric towards floral fabric and at last place dot fabric upon all, having right side towards floral
fabric, see below photo. Draw the template for sides on the backside of the dot fabric. Attach all layers
with safety pins and sew the outline, leaving an opening. Do the same with the other rectangles to form the other side of the bag.
BEWARE: Draw the outline of the template having the same distance from the bottom edge of
each rectangle, so the two pockets of the side parts will have the same height.
Cut out the shapes and turn the side. Close the opening by hand.
Fold the sides half and mark with a pin the central point.
Fold the long sides of the bag in half too and mark the central point with a pin.
Shape the side to the bag and secure with pins. Note: the side will not reach the upper corner of the bag. There will be a distance around 3¼ - 3½" (8-9 cm). Remember to have the same distance at both side of the side.
Then sew the side to the bag, the first outside, then turning the bag inside out, inside. Do the same
with the other side.
HANDLES
For handles take a strip 4¾ x 19¾" (12 x 50 cm). With right sides together sew along 3 sides, leaving
an opening along the long side to turn the handle.
Turn the handle. Close the opening by hand.
With a pen draw a line on the fabric at a distance of 2" (5 cm) from the start of the strip and 2" (5
cm) from the end.
Now bend the handle in half and sew topstitching from line to line.
Stuff handle with padding to stiffen it. To give the end and start of the handle a nice “leaf” look, fold back the corners to form a nice triangle, see photo.
Baste the handle. Center the handle and sew it on the bag; the tip of the leaf shape on the handle is place around 3½" (9 cm) from top edge and distance between handles is 7½" (19 cm). Before completing add some more padding inside the handle.
Do the same for making the other handle. Close the tapes of the bag with a knot.
Your new bag is ready!
