Patchwork Gift Bag Tutorial

Patchwork Gift Bag Tutorial

Sew a Quick Patchwork Drawstring Bag. How to Sew a Drawstring Bag. Free Sewing Tutorial.

Here is the cutting of the patchwork gift bag:

two squares of thin volume fleece (not shown in the picture) 8.5 x 8.5″
a total of 28 squares for the front and back of the gift bag measuring 2.5 x 2.5″
 two rectangles 8.5 x 2.5″
for the tunnel drawstring two rectangles 8.5 x 2″
 cord or a nice ribbon 1.2 m

You can now lay out the small squares. I then sort them and move them back and forth until they fit.

You need 14 squares for one side of the patchwork gift bag. For the base, you can leave out the two squares that make up the base. See part 1

You can cut out a 2.5 x 2.5″ square from the two 8.5 x 8.5″ thin volume fleece squares at two opposite corners.

Sew the squares together with a seam allowance of a quarter of an inch. It is quicker if you “chain stitch” directly. Simply feed all the pieces through the machine one after the other.  The cross rows are sewn first.

ironing and quilting:

Here I have drawn in the direction of ironing. This is important because...

...then interlock the seam allowances. This ensures that the corners meet perfectly. Press the long seams flat again in one direction and to one side. Now you can make a small quilt sandwich. Place the thin piece of batting under the patchwork squares and be sure to pin it in place to prevent it from slipping. The cut-out corners of the volume stabilizer meet the two lower squares.

In this case, I set the stitch length to 3.5 for quilting and, as in the first part, used my metallic thread in silver again. The bobbin thread is white. It is important to sew slowly, as the metallic thread can break more easily. The quilting seam runs a quarter of an inch from the seam shadow.

Then assemble the bag as described in my gift bag part 1 tutorial.
