Case for Tablet - felting wool.
MATERIALS
- 70-80 g of carded wool for the basis of light gray or beige color
- white, faded yellow and green-red carded
- merino (tops / comb ribbon, fiber fineness 18-21 microns): 6 shades of green,
4 shades of yellow and white
- liquid soap
- hot water (not boiling water!)
- a plastic bottle with four holes in the cap
- wooden rolling
- mosquito net
- terry towel
- air bubble film for pattern
- foam rubber
- small scissors
- needle for filting No. 38 (four-beam sprocket)
- sketch drawing.
Cover base
1. Measure the tablet, increase the resulting size by 20-25%. Cut out the pattern of the desired size from the bubble film (in this case, the pattern size is 22 x 30 cm). Divide the carded wool for the base into two equal parts. Spread the first part of the wool evenly on a plastic film, repeating the shape of the pattern and adding 2-3 cm wide allowances from each edge.
2. Set the pattern aside and cover the dry blank with a mosquito net. Pour plenty of warm water onto the layout, leaving the allowances dry.
3. Type liquid soap in your palms and, spreading it over the surface, blot the wool, trying to compress its layers. Then, for 3-5 minutes, gently rub the surface with effortless multidirectional movements, so that the upper fibers mesh well with each other.
Tip:
As a basis, you can take any drawing you like. Suitable floral motifs or landscape sketches.
Workplace
For the proper organization of work on the table, spread a corrugated rubber mat. Its relief additionally affects the fibers of the wool and accelerates the process of felting. As an alternative, most craftswomen use a dense anti-slip air bubble film or ordinary polyethylene. This helps protect furniture from moisture and contributes to ease of use.
4. Remove the net and place the bubble pattern in the center of the workpiece. Bend the seam allowances protruding from the bottom and sides.
5. Lay the second dry part of the wool over the workpiece, cover the layout with a net, moisten and grind for 3-5 minutes, as described above.
6. Remove the mesh, turn the workpiece over and fold the allowances. Cover the layout again with a net and gently rub the stocks with soapy hands.
7. Work on the top of the base. To do this, carefully, trying not to shift the pattern, bend the upper allowances inside the entire circumference.
8. Cover the workpiece with a net and rub the allowances with soapy hands so that the edges are even and uniform.
Creating a drawing using the technique of wet felting
9. Lay out the drawing, focusing on the sketch. For the background, stretch the wool fibers to a transparent state. Spread the card on the front side of the workpiece in the following order: on the bottom there are stained-green fibers, above it is faded yellow, and on top it is white.
10. Take a medium green coat, separate the thin strands and lay out the resulting grass on the base, adjusting the shape with small scissors.
11. In the same way, but using a darker green coat, lay out the flower stems and bud.
12. Form the necessary number of round "caps" of flowers from a white caroch and arrange them on the base in accordance with the sketch. In the middle of the “hats” place pieces of green-green wool.
13. Complete the pattern with blades of grass using lighter green coat colors. Lay out the outline of some blades of grass and stalks, while shading them with white locks, previously tightening them with your fingers.
Important!
In the process of felting, the surface of the workpiece should be sufficiently moistened, but the wool should not “float”. Too much moisture is always better to get wet with a towel.
14. Lay out the colors with yellow wool. Using a few shades of green wool, create a sepals of flowers, and lay a transparent and barely noticeable layer of carothed green-yellow color on the bottom edge of the picture.
15. Cover the layout with a mosquito net and moisten. Using soapy palms in multidirectional movements, rub the base of the cover. First, do this with a light pressure, and as the wool coats, increase the force. If your hands do not glide on the surface, add soap. Raise the grid periodically and check the degree of tacking of the pattern. When it is completely rolled, turn the work over and roll the other side of the cover.
16. Remove the pattern and carefully roll the sides, corners and bottom of the cover. Turn the product, straighten and re-work the listed areas.
17. Roll the product into a roll of towel and roll it for 2-3 minutes. Repeat the cycle four times, turning the roll and turning the product over. Roll each side well.
18. Moisten the cover with hot water and continue the roll-drying process. Carefully roll the joining areas of the “side seams”.
19. Pull the top edge by hand, carefully rubbing the walls of the cover against each other. Then turn the product to the front side and repeat the steps with a towel and rolling. Carefully monitor the shrinkage of the product, adjusting the height and width to the size of the tablet.
20. Rinse the finished base of the cover with the pattern in very warm water, squeeze it in a towel, straighten and dry.
A drawing created using the technique of wet felting, as a rule, turns out to be somewhat blurry, unsharp. We will supplement the drawing on the case: we will create some of its details using the dry felting technique, we will fill with a needle for felting. Thus, we will make the picture visually more interesting, a volumetric macro effect will appear.
Volume dry drawing
Large blades of grass
21. Select a medium green coat to create blades of grass. Insert the rectangle of foam rubber of the required size inside the cover. Insert the needle into the felt on the entire working surface, tightly roll a thin strand, while trying to hold it freely without the slightest tension.
22. To tint blades of grass, use the wool of two lighter tones of green. Spread small pieces unevenly along the entire length of the blade of grass, trying to place them closer to the left edge. Work through the area by inserting the needle into the felt half the work surface. Grind the surface, carefully cutting the blade of grass, while burying only the first row of notches in the felt.
23. Blade the blades of grass with the lightest green color. A very thin lock, slightly twisting and not pulling, roll along the left edge of the blade of grass. During operation, hold the needle at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface.
Stems of flowers and thin blades of grass
24. Take the dark green wool, separate the strand and tightly twist it, roll the stalk according to the picture with deep punctures of the needle. Also, make the blades of grass a lighter green color and tint them. The lighter the green coat, the thinner the blade of grass.
Yellow flowers
25. Roll flowers to the drawing in the same way as stems and blades of grass. First, fill the needle with the main medium yellow color, then tint with more faded shades of yellow and white strands.
26. In strands of white wool, make highlights and surround some elements of the picture from different sides. Remove the foam from the cover. To fix the pattern, wet the cover and thoroughly dip the pattern with soapy hands: the wool, which, when felted dry, passed through the walls of the cover, will be fixed on its inner surface. Rinse the product from soap, squeeze in a towel. Carefully stretch the cover and dry it.
