DETAILS
The suggested usage for this palm-printed pouch is holding your oversize shades and a few francs for the cabana boy. It works just as well carrying your phone, car keys and a few lipsticks. Of course, we never turn down an excuse to add a tassel.
TOOLS
sewing needle
scissors
pen
small scrap of paper
MATERIALS
palm print canvas (10.5" x 12.")
black zipper
thread bobbin
thin cord in sunset
Gather your tools and materials. You'll just need to grab a pair of scissors.
With your fabric face down, fold it over about half an inch. Press down firmly along the edge with your scissors (or an iron if you're fancy) to create a straight edge.
Cut a few feet of thread. Thread your needle. Knot the end.
Line up the folded edge evenly with the zipper, about 1/8" from the metal teeth.
Stitch the palm fabric to the zipper fabric. It's easiest to do this with the zipper partially open so it's not in your way as you stitch.
If you're lucky enough to be on the beach this would be perfect time to order a drink and settle in for some stitching. Don't worry too much about making the stitches look perfect. Just make them small and close to each other so the pouch stays together.
Keep sewing until you've stitched about 1/4" past the zipper teeth. You'll have some excess palm fabric but you'll trim this later.
Knot the thread to the fabric to secure it. Tie a triple knot and trim the excess thread.
Turn the fabric around. Fold and crease this end of the fabric.
Stitch the second side of the palm fabric to the zipper fabric, just as you stitched the first side. It's easier to sew with the zipper unzipped so it's not in your way.
When you've stitched about 1/4" past the metal teeth, knot your thread to the fabric and trim the ends.
Flip the fabric inside out.
Zip it up about half way.
Lay the fabric flat on your work surface and straighten out any wrinkles or bumps with your hands.
Knot your thread. Pull the threaded needle up and around the top of the fabric several times to tack the two sides of the zipper together. Leave about 1/4" of space between the tack stitches and the metal teeth. You'll continue sewing down the width of the pouch so just leave the needle in the zipper fabric for now.
Mark a straight line along the width of the pouch to make it a little easier to sew in a straight line. Following the line, stitch the two pieces of palm fabric together with small running stitches.
When you reach the end of the fabric triple knot the thread and trim the excess.
Repeat steps 16 through 18 on the other side of the pouch. Trim any excess fabric, leaving about 1/2" on the side.
Angle cut the two bottom corners will give you a more precise corner when you flip the pouch right-side out. Don't cut too close, you want it to hold up from everyday wear and tear.
So close! Flip the pouch right-side out. Use a pen to push out the corners.
Of course, we had to add a tassel with the thin orange cord from the sunglasses case. Use half of the cord for the tassel and the other half for the sunglasses strap. Use a scrap piece of paper cut to 1" width. Thread the cord through the hole in the zipper, and holding both the end of the cord and the paper, wrap the cord around the paper. Make sure to thread the cord through the hole each time.
Cut off enough of a tail to tie the tassel together. We used about three inches of cord.
Remove the paper and set it aside.
Double knot the loops you've created as close to the zipper as you can. Pull the knots super tight!
Trim the excess cord from the knot. Trim the tassel so the ends are even.
You're ready to hit the beach.
