How to sew a button-closure pouch. DIY Sewing Tutorial
Materials:
fat quarter white with polka dots
old hair elastic (or store-bought elastic)
button
Step 1: Hem top edge
Choose one long edge. On that edge, fold over 1/2" and iron.
Fold over another 1/2" and iron.
Sew 1/8" from the folded edge.
Step 2: Sew bottom and side seam
Right sides together, fold in half lengthwise.
Sew a 1/2" seam around the bottom and side, leaving the hemmed edge open at the top.
Step 3: Finish raw edges
Clip corners of seam allowance.
Zigzag stitch or serge around seam allowance.
Turn right side out and press.
Step 4: Mark elastic and button placement
If available, place gift inside bag, making sure the gift sits all the way at the bottom of the bag.
Fold the top of the bag over.
Fold the top edge in half to find the center.
Using a fabric marking pen, mark the center of the top of the bag (on the outside and inside of the bag).
Also mark where you'd like your button to go.
Step 5: Cut and attach elastic
Cut elastic. (Mine was an old hair elastic.) I used a 1" button and I cut my elastic 3 1/2" long.
Sewing on the inside of your hem, begin sewing just before the place you've marked for your elastic to go. Stitch back and forth a couple of times to secure stitching.
With the needle in the down position, lift your presser foot.
Fold elastic in half.
Slide the ends under the presser foot, pushing the elastic up against your needle. Put your presser foot back down and continue sewing, stitching back and forth over the elastic several times so it's secure.
Step 6: Attach button
Sew your button on according to the mark you made previously.
Step 7: Remove markings
If you used a disappearing ink pen (like I did), apply water to markings to make them disappear.
And you're done!
Just place your gift inside...
...fold the top over, and slip the elastic over the button. So simple!
