Cosmetic Bag or Travel Makeup Zipper Pouch Organizer. Free Sewing Pattern and Tutorial.
I have been needing a new makeup bag for quite a while now, so I went looking for some cute fabric to make one up. I fell in love with this awesome Tula Pink laminate – because if you can have a colorful Spring makeup zipper pouch with cute squirrels on it, why wouldn’t you?
The laminate is super easy to work with, even if you’ve never sewed with it before. It’s backed with cotton so it goes through your machine just as easy as regular fabric.
I also added in a metallic gold zipper, to give it a little sparkle on top. Super snazzy don’t you think?
So let’s get started! This is a nice fast project, so you can have your makeup (or whatever you’d like) in your cute new pouch in just an hour or two.
Here’s your materials list:
You’ll need about a fat quarter of the first three items:
Cotton backed laminate fabric (or regular fabric)
lining fabric
décor weight fusible interfacing
9″ zipper
Pattern for Zipper Pouch
Using the pattern, cut out two of each of the outer fabric, lining fabric and your interfacing.
Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the lining fabric pieces.
Lay one of your outer pieces face up. Lay the zipper face down on the fabric and line up the top edge of the zipper with the top curve of the outer fabric. Now lay one of the lining pieces on top of the outer fabric piece, lining up the top curved edge. Pin in place, but put your pins in horizontal, along the top edge. Otherwise you’ll end up with little pin holes in your laminate that won’t go away.
Use a zipper foot on your machine and sew along the top curve of the fabric. Clip the curve.
Open up the pieces and repeat this step with the other side of the zipper. Make sure that the zipper faces down onto the outer fabric. Sew the top curve and clip the seam. Open up the zipper and you should have two sides with the outer pieces facing up and the lining pieces facing down.
Leave the zipper open. Match up the two outer pieces and the two lining pieces. Pin all the way around, but make sure on the outer pieces that your pins are horizontal.
Sew around the sides and bottom with a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving an opening of about 4″ in the bottom of the lining. When you get to the sides with the zipper, carefully turn your fabric so that you are able to sew up to the zipper seam, then sew across it to the next side.
Clip the four corner seams. Open up each corner so that the bottom seam and the side seam are touching and the corner makes a little point. Measure 1″ down from this point and sew across the corner, perpendicular to the seam.
Trim off the corners. Turn the zipper pouch right side out through the hole in the lining. Hand sew the lining closed.
Tuck the lining into the outer fabric and make sure the corners are all pushed out. If you need to press your pouch, lay a cloth over the laminate and press that way.
Now you have a cute new pouch for your organizing your makeup!
I just adore that wood grain lining and the metallic gold zipper!
I hope you give it a try!
