Waterproof Lined Drawstring Backpack Tutorial

Here's my Waterproof Lined Drawstring Backpack Sewing Tutorial... New bag perfect for swimming and the beach I lined it with a washable waterproof fabric and added a easy to carry handle at the top. For extra extra durability and design aesthetics I also added some oilcloth tabs on the corners.

You will need...

    beach hut fabric
    'etoile' star oilcloth in red
    120 cm red stitched ribbon 15mm
    2 eyelets (silver)
    eyelet pliers
    pu coated nylon waterproof fabric

How-to step by step...

Step 1

Start by cutting out the outer, lining, facing panels and corner tabs as illustration above. 

Step 2

Press the diagonal edge of all four corners under by 1cm

Step 3

Pin to the bottom outer four corners, lining up the raw edges.

Step 4

Edge stitch the oilcloth corners in place

Step 5

Press the ribbon as above illustration

Step 6

Pin the ribbon handle to the back outer panel, so that it sits in the centre, right sides together.

Step 7

Baste stitch the handle in place

Step 8

Place the front bag panel, right sides together with the front lining pieces. Pin together at the top to secure.

Step 9

Using a 1cm seam allowance, stitch the two panels together. 

Step 10

Press seam open. Repeat with back outer and lining panels.

Step 11

Pin the outer front to the outer back, right sides together.

Clip the corners

Step 14

Using the gap left in the lining, turn the bag right side out

Step 15

Push the corners out

Step 16

Slip stitch the lining close

Step 17

Push the lining inside the outer bag. Lining up the seam with the top edge, pin to secure in place.

Step 18

Using a 3cm seam allowance, stitch a row of stitching around top edge for drawstring channel. Edge stitch along the top edge.

Step 19

Using a small safety pin, thread one length of ribbon thru the drawcord channel at the top. Starting and finishing the same side. Using a small safety pin, thread the remaining length of ribbon thru the drawcord channel at the top on the opposite side. Starting and finishing the same side.

Step 20

Following the manufacturer's instructions punch holes for your eyelets in the bottom corners of the bag.

Step 21

Attach eyelets.

Step 22

Thread ends of ribbon drawcord on each side through the corresponding eyelet. Overlap ends of ribbon drawcord and stitch to secure in place.

Step 23

Now your bag is ready to be used!
