This tote bag is done slightly different to the standard tote where you make the outer bag and then the lining and pop one inside the other. You actually sew one lining to one outer fabric and then sew them all together after putting on pockets and handles.
Cutting Fabrics – read carefully to take advantage of your fabric
Outer fabric (spots) – total ¾ of a yard or 26” to be exact
1. Cut 2 rectangles 18”x13” then
2. Cut 2 rectangles 18” x 5” for inside pockets from the piece you cut off above
3. 2 strips 4” wide x 42” for handles or WOF (width of fabric)
Lining fabric (cream)
• 2 rectangles 18”x13”
Outer pocket fabric
• 2 rectangles 8” x 20” – you could use some of those fat quarters laying around ☺
Pellon – Iron on
• 2 rectangles 18”x13”
Iron pellon onto wrong side of outer fabric.
Iron straps in half length way with wrong sides together. The crease will be a guide line.
Open out and press both raw edges in towards the creased guide line.
Now iron the sides together so that the raw edges are caught in the middle.
Top stitch both edges of the handles.
Iron the outer pocket in half with the wrong sides together and short edges together.
Top stitch the folded edge of the pockets.
With right sides together of the inside pocket fabric sew both long edges together. This will create a tube. Turn inside out and press. Top stitch one long edge only.
Place the inside pocket onto one of the inside lining pieces about 3” from the bottom edge. Using pins to pin and mark where you will sew. From the edge 3”, 7” 15”. This will create 4 pockets.
Sew from top to bottom of pocket on these areas then sew across the bottom of the pocket. The sides will be sewn into the bag when it is sewn together.
With the inner and outer fabric sew right sides together at the top edge. Open out and press along seam. Repeat for other inner and outer fabric.
Place outer pocket onto the outside fabric 5” from the edge at the bottom edge of fabric.
Now place the handles centrally over the raw edges of the pockets starting at the bottom of the bag and pin in place until about 1” from the top edge of the bag/lining join.
Sew the handles in place over the top-stitched line. Repeat on both sides of both bag pieces.
Place these two pieces right sides together. Lining against lining and outer fabric against
outer fabric making sure handles are flat and not caught sew all the way around the four edges leaving a 5” gap for turning.
Paper bag the bottom corners by folding the four corners together with seams matching and measuring 1.5” inches in from the point. Sew across and then cut off a quarter inch from sewn seam.
Turn the whole things inside out and push the lining inside the outer bag. Hand stitch the opening closed neatly.
Top stitch the top edge of bag. wahhh lahhhh ….it is now all done!
