DIY Diaper Bag Tutorial

Sewing pattern and tutorial for diaper bag, nappy bag, diaper clutch bag pattern and bag for wipes and baby accessories.

First of all, cut out your fabric.
I used denim and canvas fabric for the exterior of the  bag and the pockets.
If using quilting cotton, you may want to add some interfacing.

Let's start by making the strap.  Fold the short ends under about 1/4 inch and press.  Next press the fabric in half lengthwise wrong sides together.  Open this back up and press the long ends in towards the middle.  Fold the fabric in half again and press.  Top-stitch along each side of the strap close to the edge.  Set this aside.

Now get your first pocket piece.  Fold the long end 1/4 inch down and press.  Fold another 1/4 inch and press.  Stitch along this fold creating a finished hem for the top edge of the pocket.
Pin the pocket piece to the bag exterior.  Draw a line down the middle of the pocket and stitch from the top of the pocket to the bottom.  Repeat these steps for the second pocket and exterior pieces.

Now place the two exterior pieces (with pocket pieces stitched on) right sides together.  
Using a 1/2-inch seam allowance, sew around the three edges of the bag, leaving the top open.  
(White lines below indicate stitching lines.)

Pinch the corners together and draw a line 1 1/2 inches down from the corner.  Your line will measure 3 inches across.  Stitch on these lines and then clip the corners.

Turn right side out.  Attach an elastic loop (I used a ponytail holder) for the closure.

Set the bag exterior side. 

Now get your lining fabric.  Stitch along the three sides just as you did your exterior fabric but this time leave a 4- to 5-inch opening at the bottom.

Pinch the corners, measure 1 1/2 inches down from the corner, draw a line across, stitch across the line and trim the corners. 

Place the exterior of the bag into the interior of the bag right sides together.
Align the seams and pin the layers together.
Using 1/2-inch seam allowance, stitch around the top of the bag.

Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining.  Stitch the opening closed. 

Topstitch around the top edge of the diaper bag.  Attach the strap at the side seams of the bag. 

Add a button on the side opposite the elastic loop and you're done!
