I love making flowers. Ribbon flowers, fabric flowers….you-name-it flowers. But I had never made zipper flowers. They’re fun and easy, and they make a real statement!
What you’ll need
* A 14in metal zipper (you can purchase them from my sponsor Zipper Island here)
* Size 5 or 8 perle cotton thread and a chenille needle
* Scissors
* Ruler or measuring tape
*Hot glue gun and glue stick
* Optional button
* A wood-burning tool, lighter, or seam sealant to seal the edges of the zipper tape.
How to sew and make zipper flowers
First, cut off the end of the zipper if it doesn’t separate all the way. Then unzip and cut off the zipper pull, too. You’ll have two pieces of zipper tape, and can set one aside for another flower.
Trim and seal the ends of the zipper tape so they won’t fray.
Load your needle with thread and knot the end. On the zipper tape, form a loop like the one shown in the first photo below. Make sure the zipper teeth are at the top, and make the loop about 1 1/2in tall. This can change if you use a longer or slightly smaller zipper, though.
Take a couple of small stitches, but don’t cut your thread.
Now, form a loop across from the first, and make a stitch. Make sure this loop is the same shape and size as the first loop.
Repeat with three more loops as shown in steps 2-4 below.
After finishing the final loop, trim any excess (be sure to seal the tape) and tie off your thread in the back.
Glue your button to the center with the hot glue gun….
Or….since it is a zipper (after all!) glue the zipper pull in the middle for added whimsy:
To wear, simple glue a pin back or a barrette to the back of the zipper flower.
Hope you enjoyed learning to make zipper flowers!
