DIY Triangle Zipper Pouch. Free Sewing Tutorial. Diy coin pouches. How to Sew.
What you need:
2 pieces of sashiko patterned fabric, same size 13 x 13 cm.
2 pieces of cotton fabric for lining [inside] size 13 x 13 cm, give a layer of staple / viselin the same size.
1 zipper that is more than 13 cm long
2 pieces of outer patchwork measuring 3 x 4 cm to be zipper tabs.
common sewing tools [sewing machine/hand, scissors, thread, regular sewing needle, needles/wonder clip]
ruler and fabric/regular pen
label or D ring [optional]
Adjusting the length of the zipper:
Place the zipper on the fabric [zipper head facing up], one end of the zipper [close to the zipper head] is adjusted to the edge of the fabric. Secure the position with a safety pin or wonder clip, if necessary.
Draw a straight line, parallel to the width of the fabric, on the other end of the zipper. Cut the zipper exactly on that line.
Zipper tab: made using the outer patchwork fabric, fold it right in the middle of the fabric [the side that is 3 cm long] and then fold it inwards again. Apply the zipper tab at the end of the cut zipper. A more detailed tutorial on zipper tab making and zipper installation can be found here. Sew using a special zipper sewing shoe, or sew longitudinally by hand, the excess length of the zipper tab fabric will be cut later.
Stitching:
I've already discussed how to sew a zipper in this post and this one. So we'll just skip to the photos. We will still practice making a neat zipper pouch. So the knowledge from the previous post still applies.
In making this triangle pouch, I only applied the zipper tab at one end of the zipper. On the other end of the zipper [which is close to the zipper head] I just folded it 45 degrees to the side.
I prefer to install the zipper on one side first, complete until installing the lining fabric and top stitching, after which I switch to the other side. Some of you may prefer to attach the outer fabric on both sides first, then attach the lining fabric and finish with top stitching. Either way, both methods give the same result, like the photo below.
As you can see from the photo above, the ends of the zipper are not sewn onto the entire width of the fabric. I left 0.5cm [sashiko border]. This will help us achieve a neat pouch edge.
Bring the two sides of both the outer and lining fabrics together as shown. Sew on both sides of the wonder clip below, 0.5 cm away from the edge [according to the sashiko border].
Leave an unsewn space in the center of the lining fabric. I personally prefer to sew along the length of the fabric first and then utilize a pendedel to release the stitches. This makes it easier when re-covering the hole with hidden stitches, at the end of the tutorial.
Fold the outer fabric and lining so that the side that has been sewn is located in the middle, parallel to the zipper in the middle, between the folded outer fabric and lining [sandwich]. Please see the photo for more details.
Open the seam in the middle by ironing.
Sew one side of the folded fabric. The sewing distance is 0.5 cm. In this tutorial, I sewed the fabric on the side of the zipper head. So when it's finished, the zipper head is on the bottom, the zipper is pulled up.
*Actually, which side is up to you, but this step determines the location of the pouch zipper head and the zipper pull [downward or upward]. Feel free to experiment on your own later.
Open the fabric sandwich, slide the zipper head to the center to make sewing easier. Spread both sides of the fabric [outer and lining]. Secure with a wonder clip or pins.
Sew straight with a distance of 0.5 cm from the edge of the fabric. Leave about 0.5 cm in the middle. So, it is not sewn directly all the way through. There are two stages of sewing, from the outer fabric side and from the lining fabric side, meeting in the center with a distance of about 0.5cm from each side.
Cut the corners of the fabric, so that the edges of the triangle will not be blunt.
Then turn the fabric so that the good side of the fabric is on the outside, through the hole that has been provided [the part that is not sewn]. Stab the corners using round-tipped chopsticks, if you have them.
The result:
And, this triangle pouch can be embellished with embellishments such as beads-chain or D ring to attach a string/keychain.
