Big Loop Knitted Hat Tutorial

Big Loop Knitted Hat Tutorial

Oh I know I know...none of us want's to talk about fall and winter yet, but fact is, the nights are getting colder and the season change is lingering in the air.
But I have something for you to sweeten the farewell of summer:
A super cozy and chunky hat tutorial.
So fun to make and wear!

It's made of Loopy Mango Big Loop yarn. You can also use any other mega chunky yarn.
This wool is just gorgeous and my goal was, not to waste even a tiny bit of this precious yarn. So I wanted to get two hats out of a 36m skein - and it worked!

Here come the patterns for an adult size hat and a kids size hat with a fun bobble on top.

For two hats you will need:

- About 36m of Big Loop Yarn

- A set of needles size 15mm/US size 19 ( if you have needles size 20mm/US size 36 and you want to use those, please keep in mind, that you might need more yarn)

If you want to use circular needles instead of a set there is a technique called "magic-loop-method".

Ok! Let's start with the adult version (and of course you can also add the bobble to the adult version!!!)

Adult hat pattern

Round 1: Cast on 18 Stitches

The yarn length you need for casting on is about 3m. Don't pull too tight while casting on.

Generally it's better to knit this yarn fairly loose because you are using small needles for this size of yarn. The yarn needs to be able to breathe a bit.

Make sure there is no twist when you connect to a loop.

Round 2 to 10 : Knit

I don't count every single row - I keep knitting and then I count from the outside. If I can count 10 'arrows' from the bottom up and all around, then it's time for

Round 11: Knit 2 together (having 9 on your needles when done)

It can be a bit tricky to knit two together with this big yarn - go gentle and slow and it will work.

Now cut the yarn leaving a 15cm tail.

I know, scary, right?

But remember: We don't want to waste any yarn...

Pull the yarn through the loops and pull tight.

Please scroll a little down to the kids hat for a better look from above for this part.

Do another round if the length of the tail allows it to make a pretty finish.

Then bring the end to the inside and fasten with a tight knot.

Weave the little tail from casting on to the inside of the hat as well and fasten also with a tight little knot.

DONE!

For the kids size hat with bobble:

Round 1: Cast on 16 stitches (you will need about 2.80m yarn to cast on the 16 stitches)

Round 2-9: Knit

Round 10: Knit 2 together (8)

Cut yarn and completely finish like adult hat.

With the remaining yarn form some figure 8 loops about 15-16cm in length.

Take some sturdy yarn and bind off the middle really tight. Don't cut the ends yet.

Place on top of the hat and thread your sturdy yarn endings to the inside of the hat.

Secure with a couple tight knots and cut endings.
