How to Make a Denim Drawstring Bag. Free Sewing Tutorial.
Material: 1 used pair of jeans, lining fabric (approx. 0.5 m), cord, eyelets, appliqués as desired.
Cut out trouser legs and lining fabric
Dimensions (varying depending on trouser leg):
outside: 47cm high
32cm wide
inside: 42cm high
32cm wide
(INCLUDING seam allowance!)
Finish all cut pieces all around with a zigzag stitch
Sew appliqués and embellishments onto the outer parts as desired
Mark the folded edge of the outer fabric from the left (6 cm below the edge of the fabric)
Draw a second marking line 2 cm below this
(this is where the drawstring is created)
Pin the outer pieces right sides together and topstitch the long sides and the bottom edge
Do NOT topstitch the marked area for the drawstring!
Pin the lining pieces right sides together and topstitch the long sides and the bottom edge
Leave a turning opening at the bottom edge
I always leave about a hand's width open
Cut back and trim the seam allowance at the corners
Do not cut into the seam!
Turn the outer bag inside out
Pull the lining bag over the outer bag, right sides facing
It is important that the outer bag is longer than the lining bag!
Topstitch the top edge all the way around
Turn the bag right side out through the turning opening
Iron out the straight top edge nicely
Close the turning opening
Slide the lining bag into the outer bag, shape the corners nicely and push them well into each other
The openings for the drawstring should now be just below the edge on both sides
Topstitch the bag close to the edge
Topstitch all the way around directly underneath the drawstring
Now pin the corners (make sure that the outer fabric and lining are seamed evenly)
Mark an even diagonal (here: heart needle)
Topstitch the diagonal
Make an eyelet in the center of the resulting triangle
(Oops - I forgot the photo!)
Cut 2 pieces of cord to size (approx. 1.50m to 1.80m per piece)
Use a safety pin to pull the cord into the drawstring
Start at one opening and thread the cord once in a circle!
Pull the second piece of cord through the other opening
Seal the cord ends with a lighter, thread through the eyelets and tie a tight knot
DONE!!!
