Coin Pouch Wallet Tutorial

Coin Pouch Wallet Tutorial

Small purse “Luke”.
With its practical format of 9 x 10 cm in height, Luke fits in any trouser pocket.
Inside it has 3 card slots, 1 zipper and 1 back pocket. It has 2 compartments on the outside and is closed with a wide flap. With a few scraps of fabric, Luke is easy to sew, even for beginners. Let's go!

Coin Pouch Wallet Tutorial

1) Cutting

First cut the pattern pieces to size. All parts have a width of 12 cm!
Outer/inner part: 2 pieces 12 cm wide x 22 cm long
Outer pocket: 1 piece 12 cm wide x 16 cm long
Flap: 2 pieces 10 cm wide x 10 cm long
Card compartments: 3 parts 12 cm wide x 10 cm long
Back card compartment: 1 part 12 cm wide x 20 cm long
Top zipper pocket: 1 part 12 cm wide x 5 cm long
Bottom zipper pocket: 1 part 12 cm wide x 16 cm long
Back zipper pocket: 1 piece 12 cm wide x 24 cm long
Also: 1 zipper approx. 15 cm long

Prepare the pattern piece
Cut the volume fleece for the outer part 1 cm smaller than the pattern piece (i.e. 10 cm x 20 cm).
Cut the volume fleece for the flap part 10 x 10 cm.
Fuse the outer part and a piece of fabric for the flap with volume fleece according to the instructions.

2) Flap

First sew the closure flap. Draw the flap on the piece of fabric without the volume fleece (according to the pattern or simply rectangular), then lay the two pieces of fabric on top of each other, right sides together, and sew a foot-wide seam (approx. 1 cm).  Then cut back the seam allowance and cut into the curves a few times until just before the seam.

Now turn the sewn flap and shape it well. Then topstitch again close to the edge.

 3) Outer pocket

3.1) Fold the pattern piece for the outer pocket over the 12 cm side (right sides together) and iron.
You will then have a piece measuring 12 cm x 8 cm. Now measure 7 cm from the closed side. Draw a guide line and sew along it.
3.2)Turn the piece over and press. Now topstitch the upper side close to the edge. Topstitch the bottom side approx. 0.8 cm from the side.

Now take the outer part ( the one with the volume fleece ) and mark the center.
Measure 2 cm from this ( imaginary ) line to the right and place the outer pocket there

Now sew the outer patch pocket onto the seam allowance and along the bottom edge very tightly. The upper side remains open, as this is the opening of the pocket :-)

4) Outer part

Now we sew the closing flap to the outer part.
To do this, measure 7 cm from the start of the flap and mark the center of the flap.

Mark the center of the outer piece and place the flap exactly there, i.e. center to center.
Position so that you can sew on the seam allowance of the outer piece and exactly on the marked 7 cm line of the flap, then sew.

 4) Card slots

Continue with the card pockets. Fold all the pattern pieces for the card pockets in half over the 12 cm width, right side out, and iron.

Sew all pieces at the top (i.e. at the closed folded edge) close to the edge.
Finish the bottom of the pieces with a zigzag stitch and sew them together at the same time.

Now take the back of the card pocket and place the first card pocket 1.5 cm from the top edge. Pin well and sew close to the bottom edge.

Now place the second card pocket 1.5 cm from the top edge of the first card pocket, pin in place and sew close to the bottom edge.

Now place the last card tray 1.5 cm from the top edge of the second card tray.

The last card compartment should be flush with the bottom end of the back. You may need to even out the gap slightly. Pin the card pocket securely and sew it close to the bottom edge.

To secure the whole thing well, sew together once more along the whole right and left side
along the seam allowance. The finished card pocket should now look like this:

 5) Zipper compartment

Now continue with the zipper pocket. Fold all 3 pattern pieces in half over the 12 cm width, right side out, and iron.

Now place the small part “zipper pocket - top” with the closed side (i.e. the folded edge) against the zipper and sew it on close to the edge.

Do the same with the larger part “zipper compartment bottom”.
Place the closed side (the folded edge) against the zipper exactly opposite the upper part and sew it on close to the edge.

This is what the whole thing looks like now:

Now place the “zipper compartment back” pattern piece right sides together on the upper narrow strip of the zipper piece, with the closed side facing upwards, and sew together.

Unfold the whole thing and iron out the seam well.
Now fold back the top edge (yellow line) and iron.

Now you can topstitch the whole thing close to the edge on the top edge for decoration.

Measure 9.5 cm from the top edge and sew the pocket together there with a zigzag stitch, neatening it at the same time.

 6) Assemble

You now have the following parts ready:
1. outer part (lined with fleece) with outer pocket and closure flap
2. inner part
3. card pocket
4. zipper pocket

 Assembling the inner part
First you assemble the inner part. Take the inner part and mark the exact center at the top and bottom with a pen (the center should be 11 cm).

From the center, measure 1 cm to the left.

Now place the already sewn zipper pocket on this line.
Place it right sides together on the inner part so that the zipper pocket is facing to the right and the bottom edge of the zipper pocket is aligned with the previously determined line.

Pin the whole thing well and sew on once from top to bottom.
Now fold over the zipper pocket and press the seam flat.

Now place the finished card compartment on the right side of the inner part so that the card compartments are facing upwards and the entire piece is flush with the right side of the inner part.

Topstitch all around once on the seam allowance so that nothing slips afterwards

ATTENTION!!!
Open the zipper first!

7) Completion

You have now finished sewing the following parts:

*** Important***
Take the inner part and place it in front of you so that the card pockets are on the right.
Place the outer part on top, right sides together, so that the sewn-on flap lies on the right side of the card part. (The outer pocket now lies on the zipper pocket on the left side).
This layer is important in order to be able to attach the button in the right place later.

Pin the whole thing well and then stitch all the way around (approx. 1 cm). Leave a turning opening of approx. 6 cm on the wrong side.

Cut the corners back a little and turn the whole piece through the opening.
This is always the most exciting moment and somehow like the “birth” of the little purse.

Finish the corners well (works well with a Chinese chopstick) and close the opening by hand with a few stitches. If you want, you can add a “zipper decoration”.

Now determine the position for the press stud.
To do this, determine the center of the tab and then measure 2 cm from the edge.

Determine the position for the counterpart of the press stud and then attach it to the outer pocket.

8) Done!

I wish you lots of fun sewing, good luck and am always happy to receive feedback.
