How to make a great gym bag. This is fantastic for both kids and grown ups (you’ll just have to make some minor adjustments to the dimensions) and can be used as a leisure backpack, sports bag or the perfect companion for trips to the kindergarten or even to music festivals. Have fun sewing!
You will need:
Durable fabric (e.g. upholstery fabric / canvas)
An eyelet set (8mm)
Hole punch, neon yarn, leather needle for sewing machine
Leather straps (2cm wide and as long as you want to have your handles)
Cord (2cm x 2m)
Instructions:
1.) Sew the top edge of the fabric with a simple lock stitch (1cm seam allowance, about 10cm long). This will be where you thread the drawstring through.
2.) Fold the fabric 5 cm over and neaten the drawstring tunnel with a lockstitch.
3 + 4.) Now sew the sides of the gym bag together with a lock, zigzag stitch or overlock.
5.) Pin the fabric 5 cm from the corners and sew from one pin to the other.
6.) Follow the instructions on the eyelets set. Tip: use a hole punch to punch the holes in the fabric and punch a smaller size than finally wanted. This will prevent the fabric around the eyelets from fraying so quickly.
7.) You can leave the drawstring as it is (it also works fine), or you can sew it a little tighter. By doing this, the cord drawstring will be separated from the seams of the leather handles.
8.) Using a leather needle, sew the straps onto the gym bag. Then pull one cord end (with a safety pin attached) through the drawstring tunnel. Poke the two ends of each side through the corresponding eyelet and tie a knot in them.
