DIY Makeup Bag Tutorial

Dimensions of the finished kit: width: 20 cm / height: 14 cm / depth: 3 cm… To find your way around in the explanations that will follow, do not hesitate to browse the photo details of my little makeup bag…

 

Materials required:
- A 22 cm zipper.
- One 40 x 35 cm piece for the outside of the kit.
- One 40 x 25 cm piece for the lining.
- 44 cm of matching piping.
- Ribbon (for decoration!)
- A 40 x 35 cm piece of vlieseline to reinforce the outside of the kit if the chosen fabric is cotton (optional...). 

Pattern parts :  
Outside of the kit 

Parts 1 and 2 (22 x 7 cm) then 3 and 4 (35 x 12 cm)
 
Lining 

Parts 5 and 6 (22 x 18 cm)
 
1 - Cut out the 6 pattern pieces.

2- If you've chosen a cotton fabric, for a better hold of your kit,
heat-seal vlieseline on the 4 outer faces (parts 1, 2, 3, 4).

3- Mark the middle of parts 3 and 4, then make two marks 6.5 cm apart. on either side. Bring the side marks back to the middle, then use an iron to flatten the top of the kit. Sew close to the edge to hold everything together. 

4- Cut your piece of piping in half to obtain two 22 cm lengths.
Sew these two pieces to the bottom of pieces 1 and 2.  
Be careful, the small bead of piping must be towards the inside of the coupon and the flat part towards the outside, as in the photo below. on the outside, as shown in the photo below (a special piping foot can help here, but a zipper foot will work just as well). will do just as well!)...

5- Assemble parts 1 and 3, then parts 2 and 4. To do this, place them right sides right sides together, so that the piping runs between the two coupons. sew. Open and iron.

You now have your two outer parts.

6- Using the zipper foot, sew pieces 1 and 5 to one of the zipper lengths.  of the zipper (for a nice finish, don't stitch all the way through!):
 
- piece 1 and zipper right sides together
- piece 5 and right sides together
 = the zipper is between the two sides of pieces 1 and 5.

7- Open and iron the lining at the zipper, then topstitch the lining side lining side to ensure easy opening of the kit. Do the same with pieces 2 and 6, on the other side of the zipper (I don't topstitch the outside). 

8- Open your kit right side out and iron it, especially at the seams. 

9- If you want to add small decorative labels to your kit, now is the time! Sew them on the place of the front part so that they end up on the outside of your kit when finished.

10- Unzip the bag to turn it inside out.
Open your kit inside out, so that the outer parts are right sides together right sides together, and the same for the lining.

11- Pin in place, making sure the piping is aligned and spreading the bottom fold a little. the bottom fold of the kit. Stitch all around, about 1 cm from the edge, leaving an opening at the bottom of the lining. opening at the bottom of the lining (here, between the two red pins). Finish all around then trim any excess fabric (especially at the zipper ends). 

12- Still on the reverse side, form the four corners of your kit by superimposing the bottom seam on the corresponding side seam (see 1st photo). Make a seam perpendicular to the bottom seam, 2 cm from the corner. Trim the excess with scissors, then overcast. On the right side, you'll get the result shown in photo 2.

13- Turn your work over and machine-zip the opening left in the lining with a thread of the same color as the fabric.

14 - To finish, you can thread a small cord and beads through the zipper slider for decoration!
