DIY Wall Pocket Organizer Tutorial

DIY Wall Pocket Organizer Tutorial

Step-by-step instructions for this little pocket organizer.  An accessory to give as a gift, or simply to sew for yourself! I've sewn it in coated canvas, but it can also be made in cotton, for example... as long as you apply an iron-on canvas to ensure it stays in place.

The three gussets are doubled, but can be left unlined for a simplified version (in which case, a simple hem will suffice).

Materials

- A 48x28 cm piece of coated canvas (“bottom” of the cubbyhole)
- One 72x18 cm piece of coated canvas (pockets)
- One 72x18 cm cotton coupon (pocket lining)
- 1.50 m bias binding
- 2 eyelets
- Teflon crowbar (optional but highly recommended to avoid unnecessary on the said coated fabric!...)
- Matching thread

A few tips before you start...

- Seam allowances (1 cm) are included! That's great :-)
- When sewing coated fabric, don't hesitate to lengthen your stitch to facilitate the work of your machine's feed dog... and yours at the same time!
- If you don't have a Teflon foot, stick a piece of adhesive tape under your standard presser foot.  It'll be much better...

The pattern pieces

Once you've finished cutting, you'll need to have 3 large pieces in front of you:
- The “bottom
- The pockets
- The pocket lining

STEP 1
Cut out the 3 pieces of your pocket divider. Then, using a container (such as a lid) 5 cm in diameter, round off the 4 corners of your “bottom” and the 2 bottom corners of the two which will form the pockets (here, unbleached cotton and coated polka-dot fabric).

STEP 2
Close to the edge so as not to puncture the visible part of your coated fabric, pin the two parts right sides together to form the pockets. Sew the upper length 1cm from the edge.

STEP 3
Turn your work over and, using your Teflon foot, topstitch.

STEP 4
Using the diagram below, mark all the folds in your pockets by hand to form the front part, which consists of 3 gussets. Let me explain...

For each pocket, on one side and then on the other, fold line A onto line B, knowing that these 2 lines are 4 cm apart.
The formed pockets are spaced 1 cm apart. Finally, the side pockets (1 and 2) are spaced 3.5 cm from the edges.... Follow me!?....
Don't hesitate (if you're a bit lost) to make a paper template before you start.
It'll give you a much better idea of what's involved ;-))
This little diagram should help:

STEP 5
Sew your pockets to your “bottom” by stitching along the 6 lines shown in green dotted on the diagram above. Each of these 6 lines is in the middle of lines A and B lines.

STEP 6
Sew a holding seam on the sides and bottom of your work to keep your three gussets in place.  If you'd like to add decorative labels, now's the time!

STEP 7
Sew your bias all around your work, starting in the middle of the bottom section for cleaner work... Preferably sew your bias in two steps (video tutorials available on the net). At the intersection, fold the bias over itself for a prettier finish.

STEP 8
Place your grommets in the top two corners of your pocket divider. Make sure they're at the same height, so you don't end up with a leaning bin :-)
And that's all there is to it!  See you soon!
