DIY Round Pincushion Tutorial. These little pincushions sew up really quickly and I think the tufts and the button detail really make the fabrics pop! I think it would make a great gift for a friend.
Please read all of the instructions before getting started. All seam allowances are ¼”.
Course Materials:
4” x 9” piece of Riley Blake Designs Orange Chevron fabric (sku C320-60)
4” x 9” piece of Riley Blake Designs Bleached Denim solid cotton (sku C100-32)
7” square piece of Riley Blake Designs Bleached Denim solid cotton (sku C100-32)
1” Riley Blake Designs stitched button in Teal (sku STBCRSR1)
tools & notions: coordinating thread, orange embroidery floss, hand sewing needle, straight upholstery needle, polyester stuffing, compass, ruler , pencil, water soluble marker (optional)
8 ½” x 11” sheet of paper for pattern template
Course Instructions:
Make the pattern template:
1. Take a piece of 8 ½” x 11” paper and fold it in half, lengthwise (along the long edge). Use the tip of your finger to make a crisp crease in the paper.
2. Open up the paper and then fold it in half widthwise (along the short edge of the sheet). Make a crisp crease along this fold.
3. Open the paper again, and mark the center of the sheet, which is where the two folded lines meet. Refold the paper again in half, lengthwise.
4. Open your compass so that it measures 3 ½” from metal tip to pencil edge, using a ruler to measure the distance. Put the metal tip on the marked center of the piece of paper and draw a half circle.
5. While the paper is still folded in half, cut out the half circle. When you open the paper, you will have a full circle.
6. Fold the circle in half again, and then fold each half circle section into four equal parts by folding each end of the half onto itself; after all of the folds are finished, the full circle will be made up of eight equal sections.
7. Cut out one 1/8 section to use as a template. Tip: mark the folded lines with a pencil to make it easier to see before you cut one out.
Cut out pattern pieces:
1. Use the template to trace (4) chevron pieces (C) and (4) solid cotton pieces (S), for a total of (8) pattern pieces. Cut out all (8) pattern pieces.
2. Arrange the (8) pieces into two groups of four, alternating between chevron (C) and solid cotton (S): C-S-C-S.
Construct the front of the pincushion:
1. Sew a C piece to an S piece, right sides together, along one side of the pattern piece, starting at the curved edge and sewing to the point. Be sure to stop ¼” from the tip of the pattern piece.
2. Sew the remaining (2) pieces from the C-S-C-S grouping, in that order, to make a half circle, and set aside. Repeat with the other group of (4) pieces.
3. Press seams open on each half circle with a hot iron. Trim any “dog ears” or little tips of fabric that stick out past the seam allowances.
4. Sew the two half circles together, right sides together, to make a circle. Press seams open.
Cut out the back of pincushion and finish construction:
1. Use your completed front to make a backing piece by tracing the front on the 7” square of solid cotton fabric. Cut out circle from the solid cotton.
Tip: mark the center of the circle on the right side of the pincushion back with a soluble marker to use as a guide when stitching with the embroidery floss at in the final steps of the pattern.
2. Pin the front to the back, right sides together, and sew together, leaving a 1” space open.
3. Take time and sew slowly. Stop the machine with the needle down and pivot when needed to keep the circular shape of the pincushion. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your seam to lock the stitches.
4. Trim off seam allowance, making sure to not snip the stitches in the seam.
Stuff and finish the pincushion:
1. Turn the pincushion right side out.
2. Stuff firmly with polyester stuffing. You can use a chopstick to push the stuffing around the inside of the pincushion to make sure it’s evenly distributed.
3. Hand stitch the opening closed with coordinating thread and a needle. Be sure to double knot the thread when you are finished and snip the threads as close to the pincushion as possible.
Add embroidery floss and button:
1. Thread an upholstery needle with about 60 inches of embroidery floss. Don’t double the floss, but keep the open end of the floss neat so it doesn’t become tangled while you stitch. Double knot the end of the floss.
2. Insert the threaded needle into the center of the front of the pincushion
and push it through at the marked center on the back of the cushion.
3. Bring the thread back to the front, using a seam on the front as a guide to lay the thread against,
and insert the needle back into the front center of the pincushion.
Pull thread taut along the seam. Repeat this step for the remaining seven segments of the pincushion.
4. After the last segment has been stitched with the floss, bring the needle up through the center of the front of the pincushion.
With the remaining floss on the needle, sew the button to the center of the pincushion,
and tie the floss at the back with a double knot. Snip the threads and you’re done!
Grab some pins and put this pincushion to use!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial for my Aqua and Orange Chevron Tufted Pincushion and that you plan on making your own version, too!
